Obituary

Laura Lynn (Puckett) Uhrig was born in Columbus, Ohio on August 25, 1961, to James (Jim) and Jean Puckett, sharing the same birthday as her beloved father. She was the oldest of three girls. Laura passed peacefully in her home surrounded by her loving children on April 19, 2023, following an over three year battle with ovarian cancer.

Laura was first in her family to graduate college when she received her degree in Social Work from The Ohio State University. Laura was a buckeye through and through. Every event in life would be scheduled around Buckeye sports, a trait she received from both of her parents, and has passed on to her daughters. Laura always had an unmatched work ethic and sought to use her degree to leverage her greatest strength, caring for others. She went on to work in nursing homes, brightening the patients and residents' days with many different activities.

Laura now joins her loving husband, David Uhrig, in heaven. Laura moved to Chillicothe for work with the nursing home in the late 80s and joined many service organizations to give back to her community.  While in Chillicothe, she started her own home health business, Family Nursing Services Inc., and began serving on the Chillicothe Ross Chamber of Commerce, where she met David Uhrig who shared her love of community and public service. They were married on September 28, 1991, and embarked on a loving union that was exemplified by service to their communities and their families.

When people think of Laura Uhrig, they often think of home because of all she did to build and nurture relationships. David and Laura's home on Larrick Lane has always been host to endless family reunions, celebrations, and a gathering spot for all who need to feel safe and loved. In Laura's 61 years, she squeezed many lifetimes in and had many jobs, hobbies and service activities. Her favorite job was being a mom to her daughters and many of their friends.

Laura is known for being a leader in her community as well as a local entrepreneur. She ran many successful businesses in her lifetime including The Garden Patch and Sew Clever Quilt Shop. Both of these businesses were bright, colorful and full of life, just like her.

She served as Children's Ministry Director at Brookside Church for 14 years, where she positively impacted the lives of many children and brought joy to all those she interacted with. Whether it was doing a sketch with a frozen turkey in a top hat on her hand, or letting a group throw her against a velcro wall, Laura would do whatever it took to put a smile on the kids (and adults) faces. Laura always sought to spread whimsey and love to those around her and she made sure to have lots of fun while doing it.

Laura served on the Unioto School Board for over 20 years and worked tirelessly to pass levies to improve the district. Laura Uhrig was a staple in the Ross County community and will be truly missed.

Laura Uhrig is survived by her two daughters, Johna Uhrig Polivka (Brien), and Leah Uhrig (Peter Sandvik), Kendi Congrove whom she loved as a daughter; her parents Jim and Jean Puckett; her sisters Christina (Jay) Garrison, and Ellen Puckett (Robert Scites); her nieces and nephews Mitchel Garrison, Spencer Garrison, Robert William Scites IV, Alexander Scites, and Jae Scites as well as many beloved Uhrig family members from her late husband's family. Laura Uhrig is preceded in death by her husband David Uhrig, grandparents Edna Wiley, Thomas Charles Wiley, Vera Mae Puckett and Elza Puckett, special in-laws John Uhrig and Nancy Uhrig, Sue (Uhrig) and Bob Wiseman, Lavonne (Uhrig) Bowsher, and many beloved aunts and uncles.
