Mary M. Elsass, 81, of Chillicothe passed peacefully Tuesday, July 7, 2026 at Hopewell Grove following an extended illness.
She was born June 1, 1945, in Euclid, Ohio, to the late John Maynard and Margaret Patricia (née Kealey) Hanson. On September 9, 1967, she married George B. “Skip” Elsass who passed away December 18, 1997.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her dear brothers, John and Tom Hanson.
She is survived by her sons, Steven Elsass, of Chillicothe, OH and Michael (Karen) Elsass, of Hilliard, OH; grandchildren, Heather, Hannah (Kevin), Keira, and Matthew; great grandchildren, Azaiah and Kaileiah; and many nieces and nephews.
Following a career at the Chillicothe Telephone Company, Mary energetically served as the Executive Director of the United Way of Ross County for nine years. She was passionate about serving her community and the many programs that the United Way provided.
She was an active member of St. Peter Catholic Church serving on the parish council. She was a lector and a founding member of the St. Peter’s Mother’s Club. She served two terms as the president of St. Peter’s St. Vincent DePaul Society in addition to being a long-term member and advocate. Mary was active in her community and had served on many local boards including AAUW, the Assistance House for Ross County, and the School Board for Bishop Flaget. She was a true blessing to her family and community; so many felt touched by her kindness.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 21, 2026 in St. Peter Church with Fr. Stinnett, Celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Margaret Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the WARE FUNERAL HOME from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to True Vine Outreach (formerly the St. Vincent DePaul Society) 61 S. Paint Street Chillicothe, Ohio 45601.
