Cora Ann Comer passed away on Sunday, May 11th, 2025, at the Heritage of Hudson Nursing Facility. Cora was born to Dale and Ruth (Gilmer) Fike on June 21, 1942 in Portsmouth, Ohio.
She is survived by her sister, Sharon (Dale) Campbell of Akron. Nieces Emily Campbell of Akron, Amy Campbell of Akron, Sheri (Fike) Anderson of Portsmouth, and nephew Darren (Erica) Fike of Portsmouth, as well as a great niece and several great nephews. Cora also held a special relationship with Dawn Schneider and her son Reese of Chillicothe. She was very special to extended family and many friends, of whom she held dear.
In addition to her parents, Cora was preceded in death by her dear husband, Ronald Comer, on July 18, 2016, and her brother Ronald Fike on November 10, 2020.
Cora graduated with honors from Portsmouth High School in the class of 1960. In college she followed her dream of becoming a teacher, earning her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Ohio University, class of 1964.
During her college years, she served as a cadet teacher at Union Elementary School in Scioto County. Cora never forgot during that time when one of her students brought a snake to school!
She married Ron on May 3, 1964. They moved to Chillicothe and she spent the rest of her career teaching first and second grades at Central Elementary. She treasured the memories made there over the years. Mrs. Comer’s specialty was teaching many children to read.
One of Cora’s accomplishments was receiving her Master’s in Reading from Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati. She was recognized in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers as a distinguished educator. Cora was an Educator Emeritus recognized by the Chillicothe Education Association (2004-2005). She was a proud member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority.
Cora retired in June 2001 with 39 years of teaching service, 37 years with Chillicothe City Schools and 2 years with the Scioto County school district. After retirement, Cora served as a volunteer reader with first grade at Worthington Elementary.
Not only did Cora love children, she loved the Lord. She and Ron spent their lives in service to Him. They were faithful members of Adena Road Church of Christ, now known as First Capital Christian Church. Her involvement included years of teaching Sunday School, volunteering at Vacation Bible School, leading youth groups, being an active member of the B.Y.K.O.T.A. ladies’ group, and she was responsible for the church sign as a ministry of outreach to the community.

A Teacher’s Prayer
For this I pray… Wisdom to teach, guidance to lead,
Strength to endure, and the hope to believe;
A better place, the world I will leave. Amen.
