Herschel Gene Johnson Obituary

Herschel Gene Johnson, 62, of Chillicothe, passed 2:10 p.m. Thursday, September 15, 2022 at his residence surrounded by his loving family and friends.

He was born September 7, 1960, in Chillicothe, to the late Elmer and Betty Annon Johnson.  On June 21, 1979, he married the former Cheryl Claytor who survives.

In addition to his wife, surviving are a daughter Pamela Johnson Chaney; grandsons, Trevor (Hope) Chaney, Dalton (Abby Sullivan) Chaney and Seth (Mariah Cantrell) Chaney; sisters, Diane Whitt, Kathy (Mike) Powell, Pam (Gene) Seymour and Molly Johnson; a brother, Danny Johnson; a special cousin, Butch Annon; mother-in-law, Donna Wilson, a sister-in-law, Laura Claytor Barrington; brothers-in-law, Curtis Claytor and Devon Shoemaker; special friends, Joe Hougland, Todd George, Terry Finley and Dave Rawlins; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.  He was predeceased by a son-in-law, Brock Chaney and numerous aunts and uncles.

There aren’t enough words in the world to describe the kind of man Gene was.  His heart was so full of love and life.  From garage nights teaching the younger generation to do body work, bowling matches, and racing.  Everything he did was completely from the heart and full of love.

He had been a painter/autobody technician, constructions worker and laborer throughout his life.  But, his true passion was in antique cars and his grandsons racing.

He enjoyed many things in life like mushroom hunting, camping, bowling, NASCAR, car shows, but, his most enjoyed thing in life was watching his grandsons racing.  He was always ready for a fun filled night at the race track cheering them on.  He was loved and adored by so many people and boy was he a chatter box.  In his older age, he enjoyed his morning conversations at the coffee shop.

Gene was a simple man and never asked for anything.  All he truly cared about was that his family was well taken care of.  He was a man of integrity, trust, and loyalty with his heart of gold.  Gene was a very rare and one of a kind man.

He touched the life of so many through his bright welcoming smile, soft sweetheart and understanding.  He will be greatly missed.

Family and friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, September 22, 2022 at the WARE FUNERAL HOME.  There will be no funeral services.
