Madge Street Obituary

6/23/1930 – 11/13/2022

On Sunday, November 13, 2022, Madge Crawford Street, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away at age 92 surrounded by her family.  She was born in Tuskegee, AL, the daughter of Eugene Benson Crawford and Madge Abercrombie Crawford.  She lived most of her youth in Chapel Hill, NC.  Madge was a graduate of St. Margaret’s School in Tappahannock, Va.  She also attended the University of North Carolina and was a member of the Tri Delta sorority.  She worked for the St. Regis Paper Co. in New York City for two years before marrying her loving husband, John Scott Street of Chillicothe.  They were married in Chapel Hill, NC in 1954, and settled back in Chillicothe in 1956.  They were married for 54 wonderful years before his passing in 2008.

Madge, Mom, or Granny was best known for her wonderful warm smile and her good-humored wit.  She loved to laugh, and she enjoyed hosting family and friends. She is survived by her children:  John (Lynn) Street of Chillicothe; Madge (Pete) Vail of Lancaster, OH; Barry (Mary) Street of Florida.  Also surviving are 7 grandchildren:  Scott Street, Kenny Street and Fiancée Britain Somple, Emily (Bill) Betson,  Kevin (Samantha) Street, Ellen Vail, Sam Vail, and Grace Vail;  and 7 great-grandchildren:  Noah, Isaac, and Andrew Betson, and Claire, Benson, Mary, and Annie Street.  An 8th great-grandchild is expected in January. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Francis Crawford and Jerry Leshner; nieces Beth Crawford, Lane Crawford, Ginna Murray, Benbury Carstensen, Mary Jean Weston, and Beth McDulin, and nephews Milo Crawford and William Leshner.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband, her twin brother Milo Crawford, and her older brother Gene Crawford and his wife, Virginia.  Also preceding her were her sister-in-law, Dr. Betty Oakes and her husband Donald and her brother-in-law Donald Leshner.

Madge was active in many local civic organizations including the YMCA Women’s Board; the Adena Women’s Board; the Junior Civic League (sustaining member); and the Thrift Shop. She volunteered at both the “old” Chillicothe Hospital and the current Adena Regional Medical Center and at Worthington Elementary and Smith Junior High schools.  Madge was an excellent athlete and skilled cardplayer. She lettered in badminton at the University of North Carolina and was a 2-time golf champion at the Chillicothe Country Club. She loved golf, bowling, and bridge with friends, and teaching her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to play cards.

The family wishes to express a special note of gratitude for the staff of Adena Hospice for the kindness, love, and comfort they provided, especially from Emily, Jess, and Dr. Seidensticker.

A private funeral service will be held for family and special friends.  Arrangements are through WARE FUNERAL HOME.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those who wish instead make a donation to either:  Good Shepherd Anglican Church P.O. Box 883 Chillicothe, OH 45601 or Adena Hospice, LLC 2077 Western Avenue Chillicothe, OH 45601
