Steven L. Coppel, 70, of Chillicothe, died 3:56 p.m. Monday, April 26, 2021 at his residence following an extended illness.
He was born January 30, 1951, in Chillicothe, Ohio, to the late Charles W. and Donna J. Grooms Coppel. On October 7, 1984, he married the former LaRue S. Stallings.
Surviving is a son, Heath Coppel, of Chillicothe; a daughter, Stephanie (Mart) Lucas, of Chillicothe; step children, Barbara Hoaugtt, Donna Hicks, Rhonda Durham and Stacie (Joe) Jackson, all of North Carolina; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; sisters, Nancy (Terry) Edgington and Lynn L. Halasz; a brother, Richard W. (Michele) Coppel, all of Chillicothe; and several nieces, nephews, and aunts. He was predeceased by his former wife and mother of his children, Elizabeth Ann Valentine Coppel and his fiancé, Rita Irene Althouse Keller.
Steve was a 1969 graduate of CHS and had an Associate Degree in Electronic Engineering Technology from the Ohio Institute of Technology in Columbus, Ohio. He served in the United States Navy from October 1968 to April 1995 and retired as a Chief Gunners Mate. After 26 years, his military service covered from Vietnam to the First Persian Gulf War earning him various overseas medals. His last Tour of Duty was working as Team Leader at Lowe’s of Chillicothe for 17 ½ years. Steven was a member of American Legion Post 62, AMVETS Post 4 and VFW Post 108. He also served on the Ross County Veterans Honor Guard and was a volunteer at the Adena Mansion and Gardens.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, April 30, 2021 in the WARE FUNERAL HOME with Pastor Jack Norman officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery’s Soldiers Square where military graveside rites will be conducted by the Ross County Veterans Honor Guard. Friends may call at the WARE FUNERAL HOME one hour prior to the service on Friday.
