Wayne Austin Conaway, 92, of Chillicothe, passed away at 6:33 a.m. on Monday, June 6, 2022 at his residence following an extended illness.
He was born August 28, 1929, in Ross County, to the late William Bryan and Hazel Viola Hines Conaway. On October 22, 1948, he married the former Virginia Ann “Ginny” Gillette who preceded him in death on April 15, 2015.
Surviving are sons, Bryan (Becky) Conaway and Wayne D. Conaway; daughters, Debbie (Dan) Wiltshire, all of Chillicothe and Beverly (Steve) Michael, of Woodstock, GA; along with 13 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; a special neighbor and friend, Sam Jackson, who he loved like a son; a host of nieces and nephews; and special friends, Neil Uhrig, Marvin Shaw, Joe Weathersbee and Danny Marsh. He was preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter, Myranda Conaway, an infant son, Steve Conaway, four brothers, Buck, Bill, Shorty and Glenn Conaway; and two sisters, Betty Manor and Goldie Kunz.
Wayne retired from Mead Research after 44 years of service. He was a lifetime member of the Southern Ohio Beagle Club. Wayne loved his days of bowling and playing fast pitch softball for River Oil and Penton Nursing Home. He enjoyed his dogs, hunting, being outdoors and giving the grandkids rides on his tractor and 4 wheeler. Wayne loved his family and always said, “Family is what it’s all about”. He loved the Ohio State Buckeyes.
The family will honor his love for the Buckeyes by requesting that all who attend his service wear Ohio State Buckeye gear.
A graveside service will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 11, 2022 in the Charleston Church of the Brethren Cemetery with Chaplain Bruce Hines officiating. Friends may call at the WARE FUNERAL HOME from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. prior to the graveside service on Saturday.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Adena Hospice for the care given to Wayne and compassion shown to our family during this time.
