William A. “Bill” Payne, Sr., 85, of Chillicothe, died 11:20 p.m. Tuesday, May 11, 2021 in Carecore at Westmoreland following an extended illness.
He was born August 15, 1935, in Chillicothe, Ohio, to the late Harley and Hazel Brust Payne. On August 7, 1954, he married the former Mary M. Barnhart who died September 16, 2019.
Also surviving are sons William A. “Bill” Payne Jr., of Marion and Douglas (Scarlett) Payne, of Chillicothe; a daughter, Theresa “Terri” (Danny Cordero) Payne, of Chillicothe; grandchildren, Bryan (Sierra) Payne, of Frankfort, William (Kayla Miller) Collier, of Cardington, OH and Matthew (Aubrey Starr) Collier, of Chillicothe; a great grandson, Dean Payne; a sister, Joanna Eger, of Dublin, OH; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by an infant son, Richard E. Payne.
Bill served in the United States Army. In 1991, he retired from DuPont and was the co-owner of the former Payne’s Sundry Store in Clarksburg, Ohio. Bill was an avid bowler, having bowled for the DuPont Team in various bowling leagues, he was also an avid gardener and enjoyed the outdoors, especially mowing his lawn. In the early 70’s, he volunteered as a little league baseball coach for several years.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, May 16, 2021 in the WARE FUNERAL HOME with Pastor Jack Norman officiating. Friends may call at the WARE FUNERAL HOME one hour prior to the funeral service on Sunday. In keeping with his wishes, he will be cremated.
